I would like to dedicate this note to everyone who owns platinum jewelry, whether inherited or purchased because platinum requires special care. Its unique properties make working with it both more challenging and, in some ways, easier when it comes to maintaining your jewelry.

Recently, I performed an inspection on an engagement ring made of platinum – a family heirloom passed from mother to daughter. During the examination, I discovered something important that I would like to highlight and share in this post.
For many years, the ring was likely worn daily. It consisted of a set of two rings — an engagement ring and a band. Over time, numerous scratches have appeared on the surface, some of them quite deep. These deeper marks cannot be removed by standard polishing and therefore must be filled with platinum. Because of this, the use of a laser welding machine becomes essential at this stage.
After filling all the scratches, the ring should be polished and ideally coated with precious rhodium to enhance its shine and protect the platinum surface from future scratches. I would also recommend that my client have the ring inspected regularly once or twice a year — especially check for loose stones, worn prongs, or scratches — to ensure the stones remain secure and well-preserved.

The photographs show additional issues with the ring, particularly with the prongs. Therefore, this set requires a thorough restoration to restore its original appearance and ensure the diamonds remain securely in place.
